About LOGO Guide Signs

LOGO Guide Signs are the eye-catching blue Specific Service Signs located on eligible highways that guide motorists to services such as Gas, Food, Lodging, Camping and Attractions. The signs show the exit numbers where those services are located.

Why LOGO?

The primary benefit of using LOGO signs is that a motorist will know which specific brand or providers of services are accessible from an interchange prior to exiting the limited-access highway. Travelers and potential customers will follow the widely recognized ‘blue signs’ to your business. The brand exposure gained with highway LOGOs is one of the least-expensive and most cost-effective ways to leverage your brand.

Eligibility

General Criteria

Participation Criteria adopted by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Revised by VDOT November 9th, 2018.

Specific Travel Services (LOGO) Signing may be installed on any limited access highway under the authority of the Virginia Department of Transportation. Trailblazers can be placed on any route under the authority of VDOT or with approval from the authorizing entity that maintains the right of way.

To qualify for Specific Travel Services (LOGO) Signing, a facility shall be open to the general public and shall:

Meet the appropriate criteria/eligibility requirements for the type of facility.
Comply with all applicable laws concerning the provision of public accommodations without regard to age, race, religion, color, sex, national origin, or accessibility by the physically handicapped.
Furnish the necessary panels displaying the name, symbol or trademark of the facility fabricated according to the specifications of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), at no cost to VDOT. (The facility is free to select any fabricator of their choosing for the panels.)
Agree to abide by all rules, regulations, policies, procedures and criteria associated with the program, including the Bumping Policy.
Agree that in any cases of dispute or other disagreement with the rules, regulations, policies, procedures and criteria or applications of the program, the decision of the State Traffic Engineer shall be final and binding.

Specific Travel Services Criteria

GAS

Category I

Three (3) miles max from interchange / intersection
Fuel, oil, tire repair (or info), compressed air
Public restroom with full sanitary facilities
16 hours/day – 7 days/week

Category II

All of the above except,
12 hours/day – 7 days/week

FOOD

Category I

Three (3) miles max from interchange / intersection
State Board of Health permit
Indoor seating for 20 adults
12 consecutive hours/day – 6 days/week (Open no later than 7:00 a.m.)
Menu conspicuously displayed
Hours displayed visible to the customer prior to entering the business.

Category II

All above except,
Indoor seating for 20 adults or a combination of 20 indoor and outdoor seats, plus 10 spaces for drive up service
6 hours/day – 6 days/week

LODGING

Category I

Three (3) miles max from interchange / intersection
State Board of Health permit
10 or more rooms for rent
Off-street parking for each room
Open 24 hours / day – 7 days/week

Category II

All above except,
Four or more rooms for rent

CAMPING

Fifteen (15) mile max from interchange / intersection
State Board of Health permit
10 or more camping units
Off-street parking for each unit
Open 24 hours/day – 7 days/week

ATTRACTIONS

In addition to the General Criteria for Specific Travel Services (Logo) Signing, to qualify for an ATTRACTIONS sign a facility shall:

Not be currently using other Supplemental Guide Signs at the same location as the logo mainline or trailblazer signing.
Have licensing or approval, where required.
Provide sanitary public restroom facilities.
Be in continuous operation at least eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days per week during the normal operating season for the type of establishment (except this requirement shall not apply to certain facilities such as Arenas, Auditoriums, Civic Centers, Stadiums, flea markets and drive-in theaters).
Be located within fifteen (15) miles of the interchange and must provide written directions or have adequate signage to direct the motorist back to their original route of travel.
Provide adequate parking to accommodate normal traffic volumes for the facility.
Be of regional interest to the traveling public and one or more of the following Acceptable Sites.
Wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries shall be in continuous operation at least six (6) hours a day, five (5) days per week and shall offer tours of the production process during posted hours of operation.

General Excluded Criteria for ATTRACTIONS

The following are excluded from participation as an ATTRACTION on a specific travel services (LOGO) sign. The exclusion only relates to qualification under these categories. These facilities may participate if qualifying under another acceptable category. This list of “Excluded Sites” is not all- inclusive. Not appearing on this list by name is no guarantee that a facility will automatically qualify for signing under this category.

Q & A

How many business LOGO panels can be displayed on one sign?

No more than six (6) business logo panels shall be displayed on any background sign.

How many trailblazer signs can a business have?

The number of trailblazer signs required for each establishment may vary. Signs shall only be placed at major decision points, where the motorists must turn and the establishment is not visible, as necessary to guide motorists to the establishment. The establishment shall be required to pay an additional annual fee for each trailblazer.

Can one business ‘bump’ another off a sign?

There is a bumping policy for gas, food, lodging, and attraction businesses in the Logo program. It does not effect current agreements, but the ‘bumped’ business would be replaced at the end of contract term. The program encourages signing businesses closer to the exit, so a business that is two miles out can be bumped by a business that is only one mile out. A business in the same category can also be bumped if a more qualified business applies, referred to as Category one and Category two. Read the full policy here.
